Alice M Mrkvicka was born May 2, 1915, in Ashton. She was one of 8 children born to Joseph and Mary (Woitalewicz) Mrkvicka. She grew up on the family farm, 4 miles north of Ashton and attended District 22. She and Edmund Lewandowski were married on November 17th, 1936, at Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Paplin.  They made their home on a farm northwest of Ashton and farmed for 37 years.

Alice was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, St. Francis Catholic Church in Ashton, and St. Josaphat’s Catholic Church in Loup City.   Edmund and Alice sang in the St. Josaphat’s and St. Francis Adult church choirs and loved singing Polish hymns.  She was a member of the St. Ann’s Quilters, and honorary member of the Rosary Sodality. Alice was very active serving and providing food for all funeral masses at church.

Alice was well known for the beautiful wedding cakes she made. She enjoyed cooking and was an accomplished seamstress. She made beautiful quilts and crocheted complicated doilies and pillows. She loved to play BINGO and was a frequent winner.  Her newest hobbies were word searches and adult coloring books.  Alice also spent much time helping Edmund in the fields. Even though Edmund and Alice never had children of their own, they treated their 60 nephews and nieces as their own.
