David A. Winkleman, 61 of Loup City, NE died Sunday, July 31, 2011 at his home in Loup City. Memorial graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 6, 2011 at Evergreen Cemetery in Loup City with Reverend Douglas DeNeui officiating. Graveside Military Honors will be provided by the Loup City American Legions Post #48. Memorials are suggested to the Winkleman family or donor’s choice. Since being diagnosed with lung cancer in November of 2009 he was very appreciative of everyone’s thoughts, prayers and words of hope.
David A. Winkleman was born June 6, 1950 at Loup City, NE to Gloyd Allen and Marilyn Ann (Jensen) Winkleman. He grew up and attended grade school and jr. high in Casper, Wyoming and graduated from Loup City High School in 1968. In November of 1968 he entered the United States Navy and served until 1989. During his enlistment he served in
Da Nang, Vietnam; Great Lakes Naval Station in Chicago, IL; Tsurumi, Japan and then at the San Diego Naval Station. In and around those assignments he served on 13 different US Naval Ships and retired as a Chief Storekeeper (E-7). He moved back to Loup City in 1989 working a variety of jobs including carrying mail. His passion included working with veterans and their families, the VFW and American Legion. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion Posts in Loup City.
He is survived by one son, Scott Frederick Winkleman of New Jersey; three daughters, Amy Lynn of Tampa, FL, Lea Ann of North Carolina and Catherine Ann of Tampa, FL; 11 grandchildren and one step grandchild; one sister, Mary Johnson of Kearney, NE and various cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.
