Dewey Kerwin Polen, 62 of Loup City, NE died Saturday, January 23, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, NE. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at the Community Building in Loup City, NE with Reverend Barbara Spangler officiating. Burial will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery in Loup City. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at the Community Building. Memorials are suggested to donor’s choice. Higgins Funeral Home in Loup City is in charge of arrangements.
Dewey Kerwin Polen was born November 16, 1947 to Walter Harry “Buck” and Naoma Monzell (Spencer) Polen at the Brown County Hospital in Ainsworth, NE. Dewey graduated from Rock County High School in 1966. He was united in marriage to Barbara Orlene Vargason on March 25, 1967. Into this union were born three children; Sherie Sue, and twins, Tamara Lynn and Robert Dean. Dewey began employment with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission in Bassett, NE July 17, 1967. In February, 1974 he transferred to Indian Cave State Park and in October, 1974 he transferred to Sherman Reservoir at Loup City. He took a lot of pride in the maintenance of Sherman Reservoir and Bowman Lake. Dewey really enjoyed meeting the public and enjoyed the summers when he had several temporary employees to supervise. Dewey retired August 3, 2007 after 40 years of employment with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Dewey loved his kids and his grandkids were his pride and joy. He loved sports. While in High school he participated in football, basketball and track and won a lot o medals for these activities. He played town team basketball and slow pitch softball where he was the pitcher. He also umpired many games, coached Legion baseball one year and was very active in his children’s sports. He was a Boy Scout leader when Rob was in Scouts. He loved a good game of horseshoes (and usually came out the winner). He enjoyed fishing, and taught his kids and grandkids how to fish. He loved to go camping. As a kid he and several friends would camp north of Bassett on the Niobrara River. After moving to Loup City, the family purchased a camper and have camped in most of the State Areas in Nebraska. Woodworking was his hobby. He has made beautiful shelves, cupboards, etc. plus has refinished several pieces of old furniture for Barb which she cherishes.
He is survived by his wife, Barb of Loup City, NE; son, Rob of St. Paul, NE; daughters and son-in-law, Sherie and Mike Kuszak of Loup City, NE, Tamara Sabatka of Holdredge, NE; grandchildren, Josh, Cody, Cole and Kaci Kuszak; Derek and Christopher Sabatka; Savannah, Robert and Shayla Polen; mother, Naoma of Valley, NE; brothers, Harry of Bennington, NE, Marlow and wife Phyllis of Cedar Bluffs, NE, Albert of Long Pine, NE; sister, LaVonne of Valley, NE; brothers-in-law, Barry Vargason of Bassett and Lowell Peterson of York, NE and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, grandson, Jeremy Kuszak; sister, Harriett Peterson; nephews, Kevin Peterson and Keith Polen; mother and father- in-law, Orval and Ida Vargason; sisters-in-law, Rosemary Vargason and Janice Polen
