Edna Leona Hoagland was born in on November 17, 1929, in Hastings, Nebraska to Jesse and Hazel Hoagland.  The Hoagland’s were avid farmers and stock producers, so Leona grew up adept at working with horses and other farm animals and operations.

Edna, who preferred to go by her middle name, Leona, met a young man who had recently served his country in WWII in the Navy aboard the fueling ship, USS Rainier.  On September 4, 1949, they were married in Hastings, Nebraska at the English Lutheran Church.

For many years the Shiadek’s raised their family south of Grand Island, Nebraska near the Platte River.  They had two children, Byron, and Belinda.

Leona’s husband Roy was a talented carpenter, building his own house south of Grand Island which was later featured in a home of the week article in the Grand Island Daily Independent.

Leona loved animals, particularly horses and dogs.  She had many over the years, the last being her Black Lab, Sadie who died shortly before Leona.

Leona volunteered for several years at the V.A. Hospital in Grand Island.  For many years her and Roy were both active in donating blood and volunteering for the Red Cross blood drives.  They were also on the Sherman County Historical Society board of directors for many years, and even celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the museum in 1999.

In the early 1980’s Roy and Leona moved to rural Sherman County where he built another home. For many years they raised much of their own produce, chickens, goats for milk and meat.  Leona was very proficient at milking the goats, and there wasn’t anything she couldn’t preserve by canning.

Leona treasured special friends in the Loup City community who helped her in her final years; Kathy Spotanski and Greg Wrenn.

Leona is survived by her daughter Belinda and husband Lynn Chelewski of Beatrice, their son Cody Chelewski of Hartford, Kansas, one son, Byron Shiadek of Norfolk, his daughter Melissa Schwichtenberg who lives with her husband Chad near Rising City.  Melissa has three boys, Matthew Beiermann, Landon, and Logan Humpal, all of Rising City. Leona was preceded in death by her parents, husband Roy, one sister Delores.
