Fern Jean (Willms) McCartney
, 65 of Loup City, NE died Monday, January 18, 2010 at St. Johns Good Samaritan Center in Kearney, NE. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 23, 2010 at the United Methodist Church in Loup City, NE with Reverend Barbara Spangler and Reverend Scott Taylor officiating. Burial will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery in Loup City. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, January 22, 2010 at Higgins Funeral Home in Loup City. Memorials are suggested to the Children’s Hospital in Omaha, NE or donor’s choice.
Fern was born in Wahoo, Nebraska on Nov. 17, 1944, to William and Arla (Brugmann) Willms. She graduated from Sidney (Iowa) High School in 1963. On June 23, 1963, Fern married Edwin McCartney of Nebraska City. During her lifetime, she was employed at the Sherman County Times and as a preschool teacher in Loup City.
Among her pursuits, Fern enjoyed collecting doll- and child-sized tea sets. She and Edwin also enjoyed traveling around the country and trying new and unique restaurants. Fern had a great love for little children and particularly enjoyed the time she spent with her grandchildren.
Fern is survived by her husband, Edwin McCartney of Loup City; son, Mitchell McCartney and his wife, Jean, of Omaha; daughter, Nicole Salisbury and her husband, Christopher, of Holdrege; grandchildren Brian Luce, Emily Salisbury, Ryan Salisbury and Madelyn McCartney; mother, Arla Willms of Omaha; brother, Arthur Willms and his wife, Connie, of Las Vegas, Nevada; sister, Alice Adcock and her husband, Clifford, of Manchester, Iowa; and six nephews and three nieces. She was preceded in death by her father, William Willms, one nephew and one niece.
