Leo Treffer

July 22, 1923 — July 13, 2012

Leo Treffer, 88 of Grand Island, NE died Friday, July 13, 2012 at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island, NE.  Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Loup City with the Reverend Mike Reiners officiating.  Burial will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery in Loup City with military honors by the Loup City American Legion Post #48.  Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, July 16, 2012 at Immanuel Lutheran Church.  Memorials are suggested to donor’s choice.

Leo D. Treffer was born July 22, 1923 at Rockville, NE to Lovell and Pauline (Celmar) Treffer.  He grew up and attended School District No. 53 by Rockville, NE and received a Veteran’s Honorary High School Diploma.  He grew up on the family farm by Rockville, NE, was the oldest of eight. He helped on the family farm and did various side jobs; he enlisted in the Idaho National Guard, September 18, 1940 and was enlisted in active service in the Armed Forces of the United States of America on March 27, 1945 at Fort Leavenworth, KS. He served as a warehouse foreman on a military base in New Caledonia during WWII.  He was honorably discharged on Nov 22, 1946 and returned home where he continued to work farming and ranching.  He married Phyllis Brocker, whom he met through mutual friends in Cicero, IL, Nov. 15, 1958.  To this union three children were born; Mark, Tad and Kimberly.  They made their home on a farm which be bought near Ashton, NE.  They owned and operated several farms in the area until retiring and moving to Grand Island, NE in October 2000. He was a member in good standing with the American Legion for 47 years.   He had a passion for horses, motorcycles, polka music, reading, being outside, and working with his hands.

He was a member of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Grand Island, NE; daughter, Kimberly Harrington, Grand Island, NE; Grandsons, Brandon Harrington and Bryce Harrington, both of Grand Island; brothers, Loren Treffer of Broken Bow, NE; Jack Treffer of Lincoln, NE; sisters, Sharon Kuhl of Lexington, NE and Carolyn Hanson of Sioux City, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sons: Mark Treffer; Tad Treffer and Son-in-law: Roger Harrington; Brothers: Joseph (Bud) Treffer; Glen Treffer; and Robert (Bob) Treffer
