Merle A. Glinsmann, 89 of Loup City, NE died Saturday, August 16, 2014 at Rose Lane Home in Loup City. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 19 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Loup City with Reverend Shawn Kitzing officiating. Burial will be at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery near Ashton. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Memorials are suggested to the Immanuel Lutheran Church or donor’s choice.
Merle A. Glinsmann was born July 16, 1925 near Ashton, NE to P.F.A. and Laura (Obermiller) Glinsmann. He attended school in Ashton and graduated from Ashton High School in 1942 as the Valedictorian. He attended Grand Island Business College and then returned home to farm with his father. He later worked for the Charles Kearny Dairy in Morrill, NE where he met the love of his life, Virginia Brumberg. He and Virginia married April 18, 1954 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Loup City, NE. They farmed near Ashton raising cattle and hogs. In the fall and winter he would work for American Crystal Sugar Company in Grand Island and after retiring from farming he worked for Wentworth Agri Service and Buffalo Air both in Loup City. Merle was active in his community, serving on the Ashton School Board, Central Nebraska Community Service Board and Farm Bureau Board. He started the first 4-H Club in Ashton and was a 4-H leader for many years. He loved visiting with others and was always willing to help any way he could. He also loved gardening and would always sell his produce at the Loup City Farmers Market. He was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Loup City.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia of Loup City; daughters and son-in-law, Donna and Max Ford of Wheaton, MO; Judy and Dave Hughes of Hazard, NE; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Cathy Glinsmann of Ashton, NE; daughter and son-in-law, Jenny and Scott Walrath of Loup City, NE; son, Mike Glinsmann of Loup City; daughters and son-in-law, Amy and Greg Kotas of Loup City; Tina and Shane Peterson of Axtell, NE; son and daughter-in-law, Jamie and Missi Glinsmann of Roca, NE; daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Gerald Carkoski of Grand Island, NE; 24 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; brothers, and sisters-in-law, Reverend A. H. and Marian Glinsmann of Rapid City, SD; David and Arlene Glinsmann of Rockville, NE; Donald and Rachel Glinsmann of Ord, NE; Wendell and Frances Glinsmann of Rockville, NE; sisters and brother-in-law, Ruby and Dallas Neiderklein of Tobias, NE; Shirley Ficken of Elkhorn, NE; Ethel and Dale Rasmussen of Windsor, CO; brother-in-law, Pete Hendrix of Wheaton, MO; sisters-in-law, Darlene Glinsmann of Luzerne, IA; and Jo Felker of Ord, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ervin; great granddaughter, Addison Royer; brother-in-law, Gene Ficken and sister-in-law, Judi Hendrix.
