Robert “Bob” Harrington 85, of Loup City, NE died Friday, January 17, 2014 at Rose Lane Home in Loup City. Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 20, 2014 at the United Methodist Church in Loup City, NE with Reverend Joel Plisek officiating. Burial will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery in Loup City with military honors by the Loup City American Legion Post #48. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, January 19, 2014 at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Loup City United Methodist Church, Sherman County Community Foundation or Sherman County Historical Society.
Robert Edward Harrington was born May 7, 1928 in Lexington, NE to Robert R. and Violet (Sylvan) Harrington. He grew up and attended school in Lexington, NE and graduated in 1946. After graduation he joined the Army and served in Korea. He married Margy E. Petersen at the United Methodist Church in Loup City on January 27, 1952. They moved to Cozad shortly after getting married and in 1954 moved to the Petersen family farm north of Loup City where he farmed and ranched for the rest of his life. Bob was involved in several community organizations. He helped establish a coop elevator in Loup City during the 1950’s. He took an active role in the Sherman County Fire Department during which time they raised money to purchase a “jaws of life”. He was a member and very involved in the United Methodist Church and took a key leadership role in helping raise a significant amount of the money to build the new church. He enjoyed playing bridge and other card games with family and friends. He also enjoyed golf later in his life and enjoyed reading in his spare time. Winter times were often spent in the Bullhead City, AZ area. Bob especially enjoyed spending time with his family and playing games with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Margy of Loup City, NE; sons and daughters-in-law, Dick and Pam of Loup City, NE; Dave and Nancy of St. Paul, NE; Kirk and Lisa of Ashton, NE; daughter-in-law, Kim Harrington and special friend, Brad Martin; 10 grandchildren; Scott and wife, Lisa, Brandon, Calla and husband, Nick Raasch, Matt and wife, Jamie, Jeff, Bryce, Cale, Megan, Sydney and Creighton; one great grandchild; sister, Kay Grove of Gothenburg, NE and her children, JoAnn, Linda and William. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Roger and brother-in-law, Joe Grove.
