Our beloved mother, grandmother and friend Merry Susan Farnham-Kim passed away in her home on Saturday, September 23, 2023, at the age of 74. A Celebration of Life service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 4, 2023 at the United Methodist Church in Loup City with Reverend Spenser Johnson officiating. The family requests privacy for the graveside memorial at Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour before the service. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church in Loup City or the Sherman County Historical Society.
Merry Susan was born and raised in Loup City. She graduated from Loup City High School in 1967 and enrolled at Kearney State College. While a campus tour guide, she met and dated Sangman Kim. They married in 1970 and welcomed their first daughter, Kaye. The new family moved east to Delaware where she enrolled at the University of Delaware, earning a degree in education in 1973. After the birth of two more children, son Tacy (1974) and daughter Christine (1976), the family eventually moved to Southern California in 1979.
Merry dedicated over 25 years teaching elementary school for the Los Angeles Unified School District. She taught for several years as a substitute teacher before she received permanent placement at Liberty Blvd. Elementary School in South Gate, California. During her placement, she also returned to school herself to obtain her master’s degree. She was a dedicated educator who loved her students.
After retirement, and with her children out of the home, Merry was able to return to the comforting arms of Loup City. She dedicated time to Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile, traveling around the state for various events and meetings. She embraced this traveling, as she loved being behind the wheel out on the highway visiting old places and exploring new ones, just as she did every summer with her father and her kids. She loved crocheting and embroidering, creating blankets and artwork for friends, family, and various community donations. Her hours crocheting allowed her to watch countless historical documentaries. She was an avid puzzler, and you could always find a puzzle taking up space on her craft room table. If you ran into Merry Susan in town, she welcomed a good conversation where she would share her extensive knowledge of the community she loved being a part of.
Merry will be lovingly remembered by her children, Kaye (husband Arty), Tacy (wife Eileen), and Christine, and grandchildren Serena, Vincent, Evan, and Ethan.
Merry was preceded in death by her parents Asa James (Jim) Farnham, Jr., and Mary Lipton McFadden.
Merry Susan’s children wish to send a special thank you to the entire Loup City community for their continued friendship and compassion. “Our mother was so proud of the town she called “home”, and we are eternally grateful for the impact that has had on our lives. The legacy of this close-knit community will forever hold a special place in our hearts and continue to be passed down to our own families for generations to come.”
