As a small child he was baptized at the Zion Lutheran Church in Red Cloud, Nebraska.  He attended Sunday school and was a member of the Pilgrim Fellowship youth group at the Riverton Congregational Church.

He grew up in the Riverton area living on a farm.  He received his formal education in the Riverton Public School and a rural school graduating from the Franklin High school in 1970.  When in High School he played football, basketball and wrestled.  After High School he worked for area farmers and in 1985 he started working part time for the Nebraska Brand Committee.  This led to a full time position at McCook, Nebraska later he was at Lexington and from there he moved to Loup City where that became home.  He was on the edge of the Sand Hills where he could pursue his interest in cattle and horses.  He had a way about him where he could get the best out of these animals.  Jerry was also always caring for stray dogs.  He would take them in and make them his own.  At the time of his death he was employed at Trotter Fertilizer in Pleasanton.
